WELTKUNSTZIMMER is planning an exhibition for early summer 2016, curated and directed by Sabine Maria Schmidt, which will focus on the multifaceted theme of “Art and Labor”.
In the digital age, the image of the worker leaving the factory has become nostalgic. Issues such as the transformation of entire industries and work structures due to technological developments, the blurring of boundaries between work and life, constant self-optimization, as well as job loss, public debt, and the resulting social change now shape people’s everyday lives in new ways.
The tried-and-true political and social solutions fail in the face of present and future challenges. Economic growth, once synonymous with prosperity and security, is no longer a guarantee of social progress today.
Looking at a present caught between memories of a (romanticized) positive past and sometimes bleak perceptions of the future, numerous questions arise that also find expression in artistic attitudes and creative processes: What needs to be done today? What can be postponed until tomorrow? How do we solve future problems? What are the possibilities for action for individuals or new groups?
A central aim of the exhibition project is to present contemporary positions on the multifaceted, historically illuminated theme of “Art and Labor” through unconventional projects and artistic works.
How are artists currently engaging with the theme of “labor”? What role does this topic play at all? What intersections exist with fundamental questions about work and the economy? And with the innovations and challenges of all-encompassing digitalization?
