We recommend sturdy shoes and flashlights!
The Urban Space Videowalk explores the urban space with cinematic interventions. We show short films (between 2-30 minutes) at various locations in Düsseldorf at nightfall. Together with a jury of experts, the audience wanders to the locations of the film screenings, always accompanied by a mobile projector van. The films should fit in with this year's theme of common space/private property and will be shown at appropriate locations. In recent years, for example, films have been shown in an abandoned food truck, on a Martian-looking parking garage deck, on disused railroad tracks, in a pub, in the Volksgarten or in a factory for construction cranes. The locations are deliberately not changed in advance so that their respective characteristics can be experienced directly. Every façade, every building and every public space can become a temporary cinema, to which all passers-by are invited at any time.
In 2017, we are focusing on the topics of community and privacy. In urban spaces, there are always places for communal encounters and use. How do we think about community today? What new neighborhoods and communities are forming, what conflicts can arise?
Large cities are increasingly characterized by the privatization and commercialization of public spaces that are no longer openly accessible and free to design. Where are the needs for private spaces developing? Where are protected spaces and privacy emerging and where does private ownership preclude open access?
In the current discussion about “commons”, one of the questions is how we can redefine the city as a common good and share certain spaces and resources in the future. The city belongs to everyone who lives in it.
The start and end point of the route is the WELTKUNSTZIMMER, where we will meet on 23.09.2017 at 20:00. We will walk through various areas of Flingern, Oberbilk and Bahnhofsviertel. The video walk will take place exclusively on foot at walking speed. In particular, the movement, the perception of the city and the conversations between the locations increase the sensitivity for the urban space and its different living environments.
