ID / under construction

9 September 2016
8 p.m.
Jury: Markus Ambach (MAP), Hörner/Antlfinger (Academy of Media Arts Cologne) and Silvia Bahl (Düsseldorf Film Art Cinemas/HHU) and the audience.
Curated by Janine Blöß, project assistance: Viktoria Hellfeier, Yannick Böhm.
Under the theme "ID//under construction", the 2nd Urban Space Videowalk explores the unfinished; hybrid forms, intermediate zones and transitions of identities. Here, the search for identity is combined with urban space: the human being as a being of possibility and the city as a space of possibility.
Â
Who am I? To whom do I belong? Where do I demarcate myself? These questions are existential and yet they cannot be answered conclusively. If on the one hand identity offers a sense of belonging, (expected) security and orientation, at the same time it dissolves as a temporary construction and constant space for negotiation. National, cultural and individual identities emerge from an interplay of self-perception and perception of the other, the demarcation of one's own from the other. This categorical separation becomes blurred in reality; the search for one's own location in society is a dynamic process. Rigid attributions of class, race, gender dissolve into the most diverse interpretations, analogue and digital identities become changing intermediate forms. There is no such thing as a fixed identity, but it is constantly being redesigned in the encounter with others. Without security and continuity, but with infinite possibilities, identity as an open process can overcome inner and outer boundaries.
The identity of urban spaces is also not a closed state, but a dynamic negotiation of options. In a constantly changing urban society, neighbourhoods and public places change just as much as spatial-architectural structures. What new, hybrid forms are emerging? What transitions, intermediate forms and spaces of possibility are becoming discernible? How does the urban planning intention differ from the lived practice? What forms of togetherness and new neighbourhoods are developing? We go in search of urban spaces as a display for the negotiation of identities. The screening locations are characterised by heterogeneity, transformations, organically grown platforms or a clash of different structures. Construction sites, interim uses, unplanned appropriations and transitions encounter filmic interventions and are reinterpreted. Urban places are described by people who stay there and redefine them again and again.
Â
Let's discover, explore and expand the potential of the unfinished and experimental in urban space together! The screenings are free of admission and open to any (even casual) visitor. A short introduction to the respective short film can be given beforehand. The "Urban Space Film Award" ceremony will take place at the end in the Weltkunstzimmer, where the winning film will be screened again and a barbecue with music will cater for the guests.
