“I just want to paint, I like it.”
So says Max Hölter, alias Max Pimpernelli, in an interview entitled “Children ask Max Pimpernelli” on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the founding of the German-American Friendship Association.
International Bergisch Art Exhibition in 2020.
Just under a year after the first retrospective, a second retrospective will be presented in the Weltkunstzimmer from May 2 to 18, 2025. Among other things, newly discovered works from his parents' storage will be on display, in which Max focuses on the object as such and comments on and evaluates it with text. In addition, we will present a number of wild landscape paintings from Wattenscheid and Stonehenge. Together with the well-known narrative scenes, they give a new impression of Max's entire oeuvre and his painting: cheerful, sad, funny, silly, colorful, gloomy, wild, provocative, experimental, impulsive, childlike, and clever.
In addition to his associative search for the essence of artistic expression, Max Pimpernelli has always played with contemporary themes, questioning the establishment, subverting systems, and posing philosophical questions.
Max Pimpernelli studied under Jan Kolata at TU Dortmund University from 2011 to 2016 and under Andreas Schulze at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 2014 to 2020, graduating as a master student.
Between 2014 and 2023, Max participated in several group exhibitions, including joint exhibitions with Steffen Mischke, with whom he formed the artist duo “Gebrüder Pimpernelli” in 2015. In 2020, he won the 74th Bergisch Art Prize with his painting “dancing clown,” for which he applied with the following words in his handwritten typography: “I just want to paint and, if possible, earn a living from it. And I just want to believe that you can still convince people with pictures alone.”
After two residencies in 2021, which he spent in Bad Kreuznach and Altena, Max exhibited at the local art association in Soest in August 2022. In April 2023, he launched the exhibition series “Kunstraum im Klo” (Art Space in the Toilet), the world's smallest off-space for art, in his shared apartment in Düsseldorf-Oberbilk.
In the summer of 2024, the first retrospective took place at the KöX studio house, which also celebrated its official opening at the same time. As co-initiator, Max contributed significantly to the establishment of these open spaces for art, socio-culture, and community in the center of Düsseldorf. We are pleased to present the second retrospective and to experience these special works with you.
At the same time, the Weltkunstzimmer is hosting the year-long exhibition space_relations. The floor installation by artist Mischa Kuball is part of the project and serves as a stage and spatial framework. Starting in March, it will be placed in the exhibition space alongside the retrospective, raising a central question posed by space_relations:
„What connects us today and tomorrow?“
The exhibition opens at 7 p.m. on April 30.
The opening will be accompanied by a musical program:
Riad ----- Joh Dreck ---- Benny’s Band ----- Jaaj.com
