Lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia
Mariam Akubardia is a Georgian multidisciplinary artist whose practice
explores memory, war, displacement, and the psychological aftermath of post-conflict
landscapes.
Raised in occupied Gali after the Russian–Georgian war, her work draws directly
from lived experience, transforming personal and collective histories into melancholic, dreamlike
narratives. Through painting, installation, and visual storytelling, Akubardia investigates
abandoned spaces, burnt schools and kindergartens, Soviet sanatoriums, and temporary
shelters inhabited by internally displaced people, where trauma coexists with the lush
subtropical nature of her childhood.
Educated at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, where she received both her Bachelor’s (2013)
and Master’s (2017) degrees in Painting, Akubardia combines academic painterly traditions with
fragmented, emotionally charged imagery. Her works often blur the boundaries between reality
and memory, portraying human figures suspended within spaces marked by loss, exile, and
survival.
