In 2012, the Hans Peter Zimmer Foundation founded the WELT-KUNSTZIMMER as an interdisciplinary art center and is now celebrating its 5th anniversary. The WELTKUNTZIMMER is both a place and a program: the world as a whole, art as the connecting element and the Zimmer as a venue and meeting place at the same time. The construct of a non-profit foundation for the preservation of the place through economic use and an affiliated art center for the benefit of self-initiated, artistic projects offers space for many partners and collaborations in the city.
The “COMPILATION” exhibition is both a look back and a look forward, presenting an overview of a time spent with art, music and theater, community with tenants, friends and interested parties. The successful photo artists Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber have lived and worked here since the turn of the millennium; Michael Burges, David Fried and Wolfgang Schäfer since the end of the 1980s. “I have always enjoyed the space and Hans Peter Zimmer's accommodating attitude and still share the love for this place with many other tenants.” (Wolfgang Schäfer)
Achim Duchow, who discovered his fascination with Japan and its “sub” culture in the 70s, later passed this on to Schäfer. This legacy, which forms one of the thematic focal points of the cultural program, is also shared by Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber, who practice the constant exchange with Osaka and Tokyo in the here and now: “The combination of Butoh - as a focal point of the WELTKUNSTZIMMER - and photography or Eiko Hosoe's work ‘Kamaitachi’ (with Hijikata) was one of the highlights for us last year. It was also incredibly interesting to see Achim Duchow's pictures from Japan. Apparently we have common interests. It's a shame that we never met. He left an inscription, only sometimes visible, in front of the studio door, which is now our studio door.” (Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber)
The WELTKUNSTZIMMER comes alive through the encounters between the tenants in the numerous studios and rehearsal rooms and the large number of artists, curators, friends, cooperation partners and visitors. Against this backdrop, a community has developed that is being especially honored on the occasion of the art center's 5th anniversary.
On 15 September 2017, the WELTKUNSTZIMMER will be presenting its cultural activities in a major overview show, inviting visitors to get to know the location and program in all its diversity. For 10 days, around 35 artistic positions as well as concert recordings and video documentaries will be on display on the 10,000 square meter site. Some of the resident studios and ateliers will also open their doors for the occasion and provide an insight into their creative work from 5.00 - 7.00 pm.
With the support of Kulturamt Düsseldorf, Füchschen, Innhoven.
