Summer Festival for Theatre and Music
in Düsseldorf.
With its brilliant premiere in summer 2012, the Asphalt Festival was able to inspire many people. The overwhelming response of the audience showed us: Düsseldorf needs a summer festival like Asphalt. We are happy to continue. And after a year of intensive work and preparations, we are very much looking forward to welcoming you to the 2nd Asphalt Festival!
The city of Düsseldorf and its living spaces are the focus of the festival. Urban structures, squares and buildings are culturally enlivened through drama and music. Performances will take place in the rooms of an old baking factory and in front of a shopping centre, in a school and on the banks of the Düssel, in an 18th century palace and an old warehouse. By temporarily revitalising unusual locations as venues and involving individual districts, the festival brings culture to the asphalt of the city, directly to the citizens' doorsteps.
Asphalt deliberately takes place in midsummer. When the big theatres in the state capital have a break, when cultural life is on the back burner due to the holiday season, Asphalt offers ten days of art and culture galore: theatre, music, dance and art, including five world premieres and two German premieres, realised by and with local, national and international artists.
Asphalt wants to build new structures for Düsseldorf's cultural landscape. The aim is to initiate and support artistic cooperations and networks by bringing together different disciplines. Interdisciplinary networking is at the centre of all planning: theatre, dance and music, literature and architecture meet and interact. We hope that thanks to Asphalt many inspiring cultural projects will be realised in the city in the future!
