In November, we welcome guests from Japan to the Weltkunstzimmer. The two artists Takuma Uematsu (Osaka) and Yuki Hayashi (Kobe) show sculptures and video works in the exhibition "Anata ga hoshii. I want you."Â
Together with curator Tadashi Kobayashi (Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Kobe) and designer Tetsuya Goto, they address questions of translation and understanding about art.
The literal translation of the title "Anata ga hoshii" does not do justice to the two readings in the Japanese language: "Anata" can, on the one hand, have the meaning of another person, another time or another place. And the lack of a nominative case in the Japanese title is an additional complication in translation.
The fact that the artists and the curator have chosen this title nevertheless or precisely points to their interest in the complexity in art, but also in communication, in images, in language, in understanding and its change between Osaka and Düsseldorf.
"Via Skype it is now easy to communicate face to face with people in other countries and we meet in virtual spaces. Travelling from Osaka to Düsseldorf still takes almost a whole day, and journeys into space are still in the relative distance. Life science research into immortality is slower than that of information technology. Our spirit frees itself online, while our body is arrested on earth by gravity. What a contradiction. So we will bring our bodies to Düsseldorf and become aware of our free as well as limited possibilities." (Curator Tadashi Kobayashi)
The exhibition is curated by Tadashi Kobayashi (Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art) and organised by Tetsuya Goto ooo projects. The exhibition exchange takes place in collaboration with Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber.
