In the exhibition project "Absence", the four female artists
Kyungja JEONG (Seoul, KOR), Ail HWANG (Seoul, KOR), Hannah SCHNEIDER (Cologne, GER) and Anne SCHÜLKE (Düsseldorf, GER) and curator HeeJung KIM (Seoul, KOR) explore the concept of "absence" and present their observations to the public for discussion in the form of two exhibitions at two venues.
The philosopher Byung Chul Han uses the term "absence" to reflect on different attitudes towards space, time, material and human beings. He juxtaposes the concepts of "absence" and "being" and sets Western and Eastern ways of thinking in motion.
The works by Kyungja JEONG, Ail HWANG, Hannah SCHNEIDER and Anne SCHÜLKE reflect the theme in different media: Among others, there are photographs by Kyungja JEONG that establish references between architecture and inner narratives, installations made of latex paint by Ail HWANG that are repeatedly changed by her during the exhibition period, a one-channel video with sound by Hannah SCHNEIDER in which a tightrope walker trains and tests the spatial volume of a former industrial hall, and a three-channel video installation with sound by Anne SCHÜLKE that shows a body in an indeterminate space and reflects on spatial and bodily perception.
Â
The exhibition in Düsseldorf will be accompanied by a programme and continued in a second part in Seoul in summer 2023.

The exhibition at WELTKUNSTZIMMER, Düsseldorf (DE), shows works by female artists of two different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, whose works, however, coincide in the depth of their inner conflicts. One of the main themes, existence and non-existence or being and absence, is expressed and represented narratively and visually in their works. It is about physical space and surrounding space, impermanence and vulnerability, people and objects, space and time. All these attentive observations are elaborated with different media such as video, sound, sculpture, installation and photography as their own way of exploration. The beauty of the works changes continuously and is determined by topographical details to conceptual influences. The stimulation of the five senses takes into account mass and space, creating not only a mood that evokes emotional responses, but also a visual narrative.
