The exhibition at WELTKUNSTZIMMER, Düsseldorf (DE), shows works by female artists of two different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, whose works nevertheless coincide in the depth of their inner conflicts. One of the main themes, existence and non-existence or being and absence, is expressed and represented narratively and visually in their works. It is about physical space and the surrounding space, impermanence and vulnerability, people and objects, space and time. All of these attentive observations are elaborated using various media such as video, sound, sculpture, installation and photography as their own form of exploration. The beauty of the works is constantly changing and is determined by everything from topographical details to conceptual influences. The stimulation of the five senses takes into account mass and space, creating not only a mood that evokes emotional responses, but also a visual narrative.
In the exhibition project “Absences”, the four artists will explore the concept of “absence” and present their observations to the public for discussion in the form of two exhibitions at two locations.
The philosopher Byung Chul Han uses the term “absence” to reflect on different attitudes towards space, time, material and people. He juxtaposes the terms “absence” and “essence” and sets Western and Eastern ways of thinking in motion.
The works reflect the theme in various media: on display are photographs by Kyungja Jong that establish links between architecture and inner narratives, installations made of latex paint by Ail Hwang, which she repeatedly changes during the exhibition, a one-channel video with sound by Hannah Schneider, in which a tightrope walker trains and tests the spatial volume of a former industrial hall, and a three-channel video installation with sound by Anne Schülke, which shows a body in an undefined space and reflects on the perception of space and the body.
The exhibition in Düsseldorf will be accompanied by a program and continued in a second part in Seoul in summer 2023.
