The city is always on the move, it never stands still. Birds chirp in the park, a train rushes by, people change sides of the street, cars move through the traffic, stores and cafés open their doors. At night, music plays in the distance, people laugh boisterously, streetlights hum quietly.
The urban background noise oscillates between soothing sounds, rousing beats, natural and mechanical noises and deafening roars. The larger and more densely populated the city, the more complexly interwoven and extensive its acoustic shell. Every movement generates a sound - the more bodies or objects move, the louder the urban cacophony becomes. Every urban sound is characterized by its own vibration, frequency and resonance. Animated conversations, barking dogs, schoolchildren playing - all facets of social relationships are depicted. In addition to light pollution and particulate matter, noise pollution is also an important component of urban environmental pollution.
What characterizes the noise of a city? What does it tell us about the respective living environments? Which infrastructures such as mobility, energy, work, consumption and recreation become apparent? How do we move in this vibrating resonance chamber? When does it become a physical and psychological burden? And where do we find places of silence?
