Workshop
The exhibition will include a multi-day workshop with students from the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Den Bosch/Breda, and ArtEZ (Arnhem). Rob Voerman has invited art students to work and live in the foundation's guest studios. Through mutual exchange and exploration of the unconventional, urban exhibition spaces of a former bakery, they will create new sculptural works.
Kunstpunkte
The exhibition is part of the Düsseldorf Kunstpunkte.
On Saturday, September 7, 2013, the exhibition will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, September 8, 2013, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Weltkunstzimmer is opening its fourth exhibition with Dutch artist Rob Voerman, who explores historically charged architectural forms of construction and living. An international workshop will be held as part of the exhibition.
Participating artists are Wanda Koller, Maurice Uhrhan, Marcia Lodonou, Sebastian Bathe, Lea Guldditte Hestelund, Michael Dekker, Tobias Nink, Kerim Cinar, Isabella Fürnkäs, Mevlana Lipp, Daniel Struzyna, Malte Schwiddessen, Willem van Otterdijk, Emmy de Jong, Roman Pankonin, Roel Neuraij and Bram Kuypers.
Rob Voerman's sculptural work manifests itself in meter-high structures made of construction materials such as cardboard, wood, glass, and various plastics. The use of found footage such as church glass and furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries also plays a special role in his work. The artist deals with themes such as terrorism, protectionism, and religious encounters in a global context. Voerman's material compositions are reminiscent of explosions or whirlpools of furniture and residential structures, emerging from and blending different eras. Depending on the form of the respective structures, his sculptures sometimes resemble cathedrals, like those by Antoni Gaudi in their organically grown structure, and at the same time favela settlements or corrugated iron shacks and simple shelters for the homeless made of cardboard. The sculptures appear as modular constructions that are adapted to the idea of a constantly growing and changing architecture and society.
